PHILADELPHIA (Diya TV) — Ami Bera, the Democratic Congressman from Elk Grove, Calif., said Hillary Clinton has his support because she’s the only candidate who understands the complexity of the world. His comments were delivered during this week’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

“As the only South Asian member of Congress, as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I support Hillary Clinton because she is the only candidate that understands the complexity of the world and is prepared from day one to lead America,” Bera said.

Bera’s comments were delivered as one the American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Members of Congress during an event led by Congresswoman Judy Chu.

A physician by training, Bera is up for re-election this year and will square off against Republican Sheriff Scott Jones in November’s general election, to retain his seat in the House. Bera gave an exclusive interview to Diya TV on the convention floor and talked about the challenges that face him this November.

Additionally, Asian American Congresswoman Grace Meng said said that Hillary would build history for America and build a bright future. “It is critical that we elect a person who will make history for America and build a brighter future for generations to come. And that person is Hillary Clinton!” Meng said.

Meng praised Indian-American businessman from Schaumburg, Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is a Democratic Congressional candidate from Illinois, in her speech.

The occasions marks the first time a group of elected Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) were invited to speak at a national convention. Yesterday, Indian American Neera Tanden, the president of the Washington-based progressive public policy research and advocacy organization Center for American Progress, addressed the Democratic convention.

“I know firsthand that the decisions our leaders make, make all of the difference in peoples’ lives. That’s why I chose a career in public policy, and that’s why I am so very proud to support Hillary Clinton,” Tanden said.
