NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the vital role of the Indian diaspora in fostering strong U.S.-India relations during his farewell remarks on January 13. Garcetti emphasized the shared democratic values and the growing economic and educational ties between the two nations.

Speaking on the theme “The United States and India: Building Bridges for Our People,” Garcetti noted that both countries are stronger when united. “America sees its future with India, and India sees its future with America,” he said, underscoring the importance of people-to-people connections.

The ambassador hails the record issue of over a million non-immigrant visas to Indians for a second straight year and praises efforts toward streamlining the process. “We have eliminated the wait times on all visa categories except for visitor visas, for which the wait time is now down by 75%,” Garcetti said. He further noted that more than five million Indians hold U.S. visas at present.

The Indian diaspora, which Garcetti called the “greatest secret weapon” in the relationship, is crucial in enhancing cooperation. He highlighted their contributions to U.S. industries, universities, and innovation, as well as their role in strengthening bilateral ties.

Garcetti sounded upbeat about the future, though there were worries over the new Trump administration’s potential immigration policies. India, he said, was the largest sender of international students to the United States in 2024, with more than 331,000 students studying in American institutions.

Looking back at the partnership, Garcetti said, “The truth is, Americans love Indians and Indians love Americans.”
