LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr revealed Tuesday night that his 90-year-old mother, Ann Zwicker Kerr, was among thousands evacuated as wildfires ravage the Pacific Palisades area.
Kerr spoke after the Warriors’ 114-98 loss to the Miami Heat about the gravity of the situation. “I want to send my thoughts and condolences to everybody in Los Angeles dealing with the fires,” Kerr said. “My mom lives in Pacific Palisades. She had to evacuate.”
One of the four raging wildfires in Los Angeles County has ripped into a small neighborhood of the Pacific Palisades, an area about 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. The fire, fostered by fierce winds and dry brush, destroyed 1,000 structures, making it the most destructive on record.
Kerr also mentioned Everett Dayton, a member of Golden State’s player development staff, who lost his family home in the Palisades. The tight-knit community, known for its hillside homes and scenic coastal views, is facing immense devastation.
“Everything I’m seeing and reading is just terrifying,” Kerr said. “Perspective is important. The game is secondary to what so many are going through right now.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a state of emergency as the fires continue to spread. Officially, authorities are working day and night to try to contain the flames and save lives and property.
