WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) spoke out on the House floor over the growing violence and persecution of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh. He pointed to the alarming rise in attacks since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Over 2,000 incidents were reported that month alone, he said.

“Hindus in Bangladesh are still being persecuted today, including the destruction of their homes and businesses and their temples being desecrated,” Krishnamoorthi said. He asked Congress to respond by saying that “the world is watching and we cannot allow history to be repeated.”

Krishnamoorthi pointed out that in Bangladesh’s 1971 war for independence, between 300,000 and three million people, mostly Hindus, were killed. The recent surge in violence has alarmed many, with calls for international intervention to protect Bangladesh’s vulnerable minority populations.

The congressman has been in touch with the U.S. State Department and Senate confirmation hearings, calling for more concrete measures to deal with the worsening crisis. “We must do more,” he told fellow legislators, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
