RICHMOND, Va. (Diya TV) — Republican Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has signed into law two bills sponsored by Democratic Delegate JJ Singh, as part of his efforts to promote public safety and improved access to vital services.
House Bill 2595, introduced on January 13, broadens Virginia’s firearm safety tax credit. The bill offers tax incentives for gun safety and trigger lock purchases, promoting responsible gun ownership to avoid accidental discharge and increase home safety. The bill also defines “commercial retailer” to ensure more products on the market qualify for the tax credit.
House Bill 2754, filed on January 17, simplifies the process of enrolling in Medicaid for those released from incarceration. By enabling correctional institutions to exchange medical and mental health information with Medicaid providers, the bill makes the enrollment process smoother at release, with access to healthcare services, including behavioral health services.
Delegate Singh, the first Indian American Sikh member of the Virginia House of Delegates, said he is committed to community safety and family well-being. Born and raised in Northern Virginia to immigrant parents, Singh has a unique background that includes serving in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, working as a credit analyst in the White House Office of Management and Budget, and advising U.S. Senator Chris Coons on economic policy.
Singh was voted in during a special election on Jan. 7, replacing Kannan Srinivasan. He pointed out that these bills are consistent with his campaign rhetoric to uphold essential freedoms and ensure families can succeed.
