LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Diya TV) — A Georgia man faces multiple murder charges after police said four family members died in a shooting at a home in Lawrenceville last week. Three children survived the incident, including a 12-year-old who called 911 while hiding in a closet, authorities said.
The deadly shooting happened early Friday morning at a residence in Gwinnett County, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2:30 a.m. and found four adults dead inside the home.
Police identified the victims as Meemu Dogra, 43; Gourav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chander, 37; and Harish Chander, 38. Authorities arrested 51-year-old Vijay Kumar shortly after the shooting. Investigators charged him with four counts of murder, four counts of felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of child cruelty.
Police said the 12-year-old child of Kumar and Dogra made the emergency call after the shooting began. Officers later found the child hiding in a closet with two younger relatives, ages 7 and 10.
Investigators said all three children escaped physical injury. The case has drawn attention across Georgia because of the young survivor’s actions during the violent incident. Authorities praised the child for contacting emergency responders during the crisis. Police said the shooting appears to be linked to a domestic dispute.
According to investigators, Kumar and Dogra argued at their Atlanta-area home before traveling to the Lawrenceville residence where the victims lived. Police believe Kumar and Dogra then went to the relatives’ home, where Kumar and the Chanders lived with the two younger children. Investigators have not released details about what caused the argument or what led to the deadly shooting. Authorities continue to investigate the timeline and motive behind the killings.
Gwinnett County police described the case as “domestic-related.” Officials have not said whether Kumar knew all four victims personally beyond family connections. Officers located Kumar near the home shortly after the shooting and took him into custody without incident.
Court records show Kumar now faces several serious felony charges in connection with the deaths. As of Monday afternoon, online records in Gwinnett County did not show whether he had entered pleas in the case. Authorities also did not list an attorney representing Kumar.
Under Georgia law, murder charges involve intentional killings with malicious intent. Felony murder charges apply when a death occurs during the commission of another felony crime. Police have not announced additional arrests or identified any other suspects. The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
