PARIS (Diya TV) —
The United States women’s national soccer team is headed to the finals of the 2024 Olympics after a narrow 1-0 win over Germany. It’s the first time the squad is in the gold medal match since 2012. Across the pitch from them in the final will be the winner of Brazil and Spain.
The teams needed extra time to decide this one after no team could put the ball in the back of the net across 90 minutes of regulation time. It was Sophia Smith who delivered the game-winner and made history for the USA.
The overtime period was intense with the goal coming in the first five minutes and then chaos. Germany couldn’t knot up the match in the first half of extra time but the second half provided a scare to American fans. A free kick in the 118th minute almost found a way into the net but U.S. goalie Alyssa Naeher made a huge save.
After a nerve racking game, the USWNT has a few days to regroup before the Olympic Final on Saturday. Either a gold medal 12 years in the making is in the cards for the USA or it’s another Olympics circuit ending in heartbreak.
