WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — The U.S. State Department advised Americans who live in or travel to India to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program as part of its emergency preparations with increasing geopolitical tensions and natural disasters in the country. It warned that STEP will keep Americans better informed about local safety and conditions and coordinate assistance better in emergencies.
In a recent travel advisory, the State Department underscored the program’s capacity to provide timely updates on security issues and emergency situations, such as civil unrest or natural disasters, like earthquakes or floods. “Enrolling in STEP helps the U.S. Embassy or Consulate locate and assist U.S. citizens during emergencies,” the advisory stated. Joining the program will make travelers receive important notifications about safety and security alerts that are tailored to their locations.
Coming against this backdrop of increased diplomatic conversations relating to the safety of Americans abroad, especially in politically or socially complex countries, the advisory is issued to the American public. Despite the general stability of India, there have been recurring flare-ups in regional tension and border conflicts with other neighbors like Pakistan and China.
STEP enables the State Department to provide alerts, and American citizens in India can use this opportunity not only to receive alerts but also to connect with the consular services in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. If there is an emergency, STEP lets the nearest U.S. diplomatic mission reach out and assist. Through the tool, citizens of the United States can also adjust their plans for traveling, making it easier for the embassy to reach them during crises.
Officials also reminded travelers that the State Department’s travel advisories for India remain at a Level 2 status, urging increased caution. The department cited reasons including terrorism, civil unrest, and potential public health risks. It further recommended that all Americans carry travel insurance covering medical evacuation and ensure their passports are valid for at least six months beyond their planned stay.
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program has long been a cornerstone of the State Department’s outreach to Americans abroad, with over 10 million registrants globally. Recent events in other parts of the world, such as conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, have underscored the importance of such programs for both short- and long-term travelers.
To apply for STEP, the citizen of the United States must first go to the State Department’s official website and input basic contact and itinerary information. The service is free of charge, and its use is recommended for business and pleasure.
