WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — U.S. lawmakers have expressed strong support for India’s recent military action in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, while also urging caution to avoid further escalation between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed neighbors.

India launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted strike against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation follows the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, where terrorists reportedly targeted Hindu civilians in what officials described as a brutal and religiously motivated act of violence.

U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-MI) issued a forceful statement backing India’s actions, framing the strikes as an exercise of the nation’s sovereign right to defend its citizens and territory. “India has the right to defend itself after what happened in Pahalgam,” Thanedar said in a statement. “Terrorists were targeting Hindus, and now that India has taken action against terrorist infrastructure, it is exercising its right to retaliate against these barbaric acts.”

Thanedar urged the United States to stand in solidarity with India during what he described as a critical moment in the fight against terrorism. “The United States must support India as it fights terrorism after the barbaric attacks in Pahalgam,” he said. He also called for “a thorough and complete investigation” into the Pahalgam attack to ensure accountability and justice.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) echoed Thanedar’s condemnation of terrorism but emphasized the importance of preventing further conflict in the region. “In the wake of last month’s horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the need to combat terrorism and prevent future violence has become even more urgent,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Krishnamoorthi added a note of caution, aligning with calls from other U.S. officials for diplomatic restraint. “As Secretary Rubio stated, it is essential to avoid broader conflict and further escalation,” he said, referring to remarks made by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) that urged de-escalation between India and Pakistan.

While backing India’s right to self-defense, Krishnamoorthi also turned attention to Pakistan’s internal political crisis, urging Islamabad to uphold democratic norms. He specifically called for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who remains imprisoned amid widespread political unrest. “The current situation should not be used as a pretext to further undermine democracy in Pakistan,” Krishnamoorthi warned.

The latest developments reflect rising tensions in South Asia and highlight Washington’s delicate balancing act—supporting its strategic partner India while urging caution to maintain regional stability.

During a press conference, India said they launched nine strikes targeted training camps and launchpads operated by terror groups accused of carrying out attacks in Kashmir and other parts of India.
