WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Two Indian-American women have been named as finalists for the prestigious White House Fellows program that offers first-hand experience of working at the highest levels of the U.S. government.
Tina Shah, a physician from the University of Chicago and Anjali Tripathi, an astrophysics Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University, have been added to the shortlist of the program, the White House said in a recent statement. The two were among 30 finalists selected for the program, which was created by president Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
In its statement, the White House said this year’s selectees represented an accomplished and diverse cross-section of professionals from the private sector, academia, medicine, and armed services. National finalists were analyzed by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships earlier this month.
After the competitive application process, individuals selected for the program spend a year in Washington D.C. working full-time for cabinet secretaries, senior White House staff and other top-ranking U.S. government officials. Fellows additionally participate in a educational program consisting of roundtable discussions with some of the world’s most renowned leaders from both the public and private sectors, including the President and Vice President of the United States.
The program has a listed alumni of over 700 since its inception, a distinguished group that includes former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.
