WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump unveiled plans Tuesday for a new government-run website that will allow Americans to buy prescription drugs directly from manufacturers. The site, called TrumpRx, will feature medications from Pfizer at reduced prices, marking what the White House called a major step in lowering drug costs.
Trump announced that the TrumpRx platform will let consumers purchase drugs online, bypassing traditional pharmacy channels. He said the move would make life-saving medications more affordable for millions of Americans.
Pfizer will be the first major drugmaker to participate. The company said it will sell some of its most widely used drugs at significantly reduced prices. The discounts could range from 50% to 100%, Trump said, with savings beginning immediately.
In addition to offering lower prices on TrumpRx, Pfizer pledged to provide its full line of drugs to Medicaid at a “most favored nation” price. This means Medicaid will pay the lowest price available in the U.S. Pfizer also agreed to sell any new drugs it introduces in the U.S. market at the same reduced rate. Trump said the deal ensures Americans will no longer pay far more than other countries for the same medications.
“Americans have been subsidizing research and development costs for the entire planet,” Trump said during the announcement in the Oval Office. “That ends today.”
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla joined Trump for the announcement and confirmed the agreement came after the president threatened steep tariffs. Last week, Trump said the U.S. would impose a 100% tariff on branded and patented drugs made outside the country unless companies built plants in America.
Bourla said the threat pushed Pfizer to act quickly. As part of the deal, Pfizer secured a three-year grace period from tariffs if it invests in U.S. manufacturing. The company also agreed to move production of drugs sold in America to domestic facilities.
“The president is absolutely right. Tariff is the most powerful tool to motivate behaviors,” Bourla said.
While Trump touted the deal as historic, some health experts urged caution. They noted that Medicaid already receives some of the lowest drug prices in the country.
Darius Lakdawalla of the University of Southern California’s Schaeffer Center said Medicaid “already enjoys ‘best-price’ protection,” which means the new pledge may not lower costs much further. Juliette Cubanski of the Kaiser Family Foundation added that most Medicaid patients pay little out of pocket for drugs, so the direct impact on consumers is unclear.
Other analysts questioned the TrumpRx site itself. Sean Sullivan, a health economist at the University of Washington, said few patients buy medications with cash because most have insurance coverage. He called the direct-to-consumer plan “a sideshow and branding opportunity for Trump.”
The Pfizer agreement is part of Trump’s broader effort to secure “most favored nation” pricing from drugmakers. In May, he signed an executive order demanding lower prices, threatening to cap what pharmaceutical companies could earn from Medicare if they refused. The White House said the U.S. accounts for less than 5% of the global population but funds more than 70% of pharmaceutical profits because of higher prices. Trump argued the new deal would help shift that burden.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said more announcements with other drugmakers are expected this fall. Trump added that several companies are already negotiating similar agreements.
“President Trump is doing more to lower healthcare costs than anyone else in Washington,” said White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai.
The TrumpRx launch also comes as Congress faces a funding deadline. Democrats have accused Trump of failing to do enough to reduce healthcare costs and are pushing to expand the Affordable Care Act before premiums rise.
The White House said TrumpRx is expected to go live in early 2026, though officials have not yet released details on how consumers will use the site. For now, the agreement marks a turning point in the battle over prescription drug prices. Trump called it proof that his administration can leverage federal power to deliver results for American families.
“This will save American consumers and taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars a year,” Trump said. “We are finally putting America first in prescription drugs.”
