WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — More than a dozen federal prosecutors have been removed from office under the Trump administration, including many involved in active criminal investigations related to the former president and January 6 Capitol riots, according to reports. The shake-up at the Department of Justice reflects one of the biggest reforms the campaign promised in order to overhaul the agency and remove officials considered disloyal.
Acting Attorney General Ed Martin issued a memo notifying the prosecutors that they would be dismissed on the grounds of inability to properly carry out the president’s agenda. “The proper functioning of the government critically depends on the trust superior officials place in their subordinates,” the memo stated. It further cited how the prosecutors involved had played a part in bringing cases against Trump.
In a separate development, the Justice Department announced a review of charges brought in January 6th related cases. This includes an investigation into the use of obstruction of justice charges, which some critics argue were improperly applied. The move follows a Supreme Court ruling that questioned the use of the charge in this context. A senior administration official described the review as a “fact-finding mission” but acknowledged concerns about its potential to undermine the credibility of past prosecutions.
The move by the administration comes amidst wider criticism of Trump’s pardons for those convicted in connection with the Capitol riots. Earlier, he had given assurances that he would not pardon those who engaged in violence during the January 6 attack, but he has pardoned several individuals convicted of violent acts. The pardons and the dismissal of federal prosecutors have been criticized by legal experts and lawmakers who are concerned about the long-term implications on the independence of the Justice Department.
Legal observers have said that although the president holds the power to hire and fire federal prosecutors, the way this has happened now by targeting the political sensitivity of those career officials handling cases is unprecedented. The Department of Justice, perceived as an independent bastion of the executive branch, is allegedly seeing a drastic shift with Trump at its helm. Critics fear that this will undermine further what already is public distrust in justice in America.
The dismissals are happening amid Senate preparations to take a vote to approve Trump nominee Pam Bondi attorney general, a position where she’ll strengthen Trump control of the DOJ further. Confirmation of attorney general Bondi is expected on bipartisan lines.
