MONTREAL (Diya TV) — In a tragic incident that has shaken Quebec’s South Shore, 39-year-old truck driver Jatinder Singh has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of Jean-Claude Evens and injured three others.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the crash occurred on Tuesday on Highway 20 near Saint-Hyacinthe. Singh was allegedly driving a commercial truck involved in a collision with a car, resulting in severe injuries to all four passengers. Jean-Claude Evens later succumbed to his injuries, while the three other victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

Authorities say Singh failed to stop and render aid, fleeing the scene immediately after the crash. He was arrested Thursday in the Outaouais region by SQ officers based out of Boucherville and is now facing two criminal charges for failing to remain at the scene and check on the victim.

“The truck driver did not remain on the scene,” police confirmed in a briefing. Investigators credit the arrest to swift cooperation from fellow truckers and local business owners, whose timely tips helped identify Singh and locate his whereabouts.

Singh is expected to appear in court in Saint-Hyacinthe on Friday. Prosecutors are expected to push for accountability in a case that has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of commercial driving conduct on Canada’s highways.

The victim, Jean-Claude Evens, was a resident of the area and is being remembered by locals as a kind-hearted man whose life was cut short by what officials are calling “a preventable tragedy.”

As the court proceedings begin, the community—and the country—waits for justice in the wake of this fatal crash.
