SINGAPORE (Diya TV) — A U.S. dentist and his engineer wife were jailed after stealing luxury items worth over $750 while transiting through Changi Airport, one of the world’s busiest international travel hubs.
The incident occurred on June 23 when Kapadia Husain Zoher, 35, and Kapadia Amatullah, 30, were on a layover in Singapore en route to India. Both are American citizens. The couple boarded their Mumbai-bound flight but were apprehended before the plane took off.
Authorities arrested them after reviewing security footage. On Aug. 4, a Singapore court sentenced Zoher to 18 days in jail. His wife received a one-week jail term. Both pleaded guilty to charges of theft.
At about 5 p.m. on June 23, Zoher entered the Louis Vuitton store located in Terminal 1 of Changi Airport. He picked up a luxury card holder valued at approximately $600 and slipped it into his pocket. He then exited the store without paying.
Shortly after, the couple moved to another terminal. Around 5:40 p.m., they visited Cosmetics & Perfumes by The Shilla in Terminal 3. There, Zoher took a bottle of Dior Sauvage perfume worth around $160. He again hid the item in his pocket. His wife, Amatullah, acted as a lookout during the theft.
The couple boarded their connecting flight to Mumbai soon after the thefts. However, airport authorities, alerted by store staff and security teams, identified them in time. Police acted quickly and detained them before the plane could take off.
Both stolen items were recovered and returned to the respective stores in good condition.
State Prosecuting Officer Ng Chee Wee told the court that Zoher stole the credit card holder out of greed. He reportedly had a history of overspending and admitted he did not want to pay for the item. The couple’s actions were not driven by need but by a desire to own expensive items without paying for them.
The court considered their cooperation and early guilty pleas in determining their sentences.
Singapore has strict laws on theft, even for first-time offenders. Each count of theft carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in jail and a fine. The authorities take airport theft seriously, given the country’s reputation for safety and security.
Changi Airport, often ranked as the world’s best airport, is known for its high-end shopping and luxury boutiques. It also maintains tight security protocols, with widespread CCTV coverage and a strong police presence.
