NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Shobha Meera, an Indian-origin corporate leader and chief corporate responsibility officer at Capgemini, has been elected treasurer of the Board of Directors for the UN Global Compact Network USA. She takes over the position from Michael Okoroafor of McCormick & Company, who retired recently.

The UN Global Compact Network USA is the American branch of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. The network brings together businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to advance responsible business practices. It focuses on human rights, labor, environmental stewardship, and anti-corruption principles.

Meera’s appointment reflects her deep experience in corporate responsibility, sustainability, and global business leadership. She will now play a key role in shaping the organization’s financial stewardship and supporting its mission to promote sustainable development in the business community.

At Capgemini, Meera serves as chief corporate responsibility officer, overseeing the company’s sustainability and social impact strategy. Capgemini is a global leader in consulting, technology services, and digital transformation. Under her leadership, the company has worked to integrate sustainability into its business operations, from reducing carbon emissions to promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Before taking on her current role, Meera was Capgemini’s global sales officer for financial services. She helped lead growth strategies, strengthen client relationships, and develop solutions tailored to the banking and insurance industries. Her strong business background, combined with her sustainability focus, positions her uniquely for her new role at the UN Global Compact Network USA.

Meera earned her degree in electrical engineering from Osmania University in India. She later received her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, one of India’s most prestigious business schools. Her technical expertise and business acumen have helped her navigate leadership roles across industries and geographies.

She has worked with teams around the world, giving her a global perspective that aligns closely with the goals of the United Nations Global Compact. The organization aims to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders.

In her role as treasurer, Meera will manage the board’s financial oversight responsibilities. This includes ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment of resources with the organization’s strategic priorities. The treasurer works closely with the board chair, executive director, and other members to guide decision-making that supports long-term sustainability goals.

Michael Okoroafor, the outgoing treasurer, was known for his contributions to advancing sustainable practices through corporate innovation. His retirement created an opportunity for new leadership to bring fresh energy to the position.

Meera’s election is expected to strengthen the organization’s focus on combining corporate responsibility with sound financial governance. Her experience in both operational leadership and sustainability makes her well-suited to guide the network through evolving global challenges.

The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, with over 20,000 participants in more than 160 countries. The U.S. network supports American companies in aligning their strategies and operations with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. These principles cover human rights, labor standards, environmental responsibility, and anti-corruption.

The network also works to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which address global issues such as climate change, inequality, and responsible consumption. By engaging with the network, companies can collaborate, learn from peers, and access resources that help them meet sustainability commitments.

Meera’s leadership journey offers inspiration to emerging professionals, especially women and those from underrepresented backgrounds. Her success demonstrates how technical skills, strategic thinking, and a commitment to responsible business can create pathways to influential roles on the global stage.

She has spoken publicly about the importance of integrating sustainability into core business strategies rather than treating it as an afterthought. Her approach aligns with a growing recognition that long-term profitability and social responsibility can go hand in hand.

As treasurer, she is expected to continue advocating for corporate responsibility while ensuring the organization’s financial resources are used effectively to support its mission.

With Shobha Meera stepping into the role, the UN Global Compact Network USA is poised to further its work in mobilizing American companies toward sustainable practices. Her blend of corporate leadership, financial oversight, and commitment to social impact will be vital as the organization addresses urgent global challenges.

Her appointment underscores a broader shift in the business world, where sustainability and governance are becoming central to corporate success. For Meera, the position is not just about numbers—it’s about using financial leadership to drive positive change on a global scale.
