LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Daisy Ridley’s iconic character Rey is set to grace the big screen once again in a new Star Wars installment directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, making her the first woman and person of color to helm a Star Wars feature film. The film, written by Steven Knight, promises a fresh perspective and a significant leap in diversity for the beloved franchise.
The Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker, known for her work on “Ms. Marvel,” said she is “very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”
The plot, set 15 years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” follows Rey as she endeavors to rebuild the Jedi Order. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, revealed in an interview that the story delves into a post-war, post-First Order era, exploring the disarray among the Jedi. Rey’s mission to rebuild the order based on the teachings of Luke Skywalker becomes a central theme.
While details remain scarce, the announcement has generated immense excitement, particularly as it marks a historic moment with Obaid-Chinoy breaking barriers as the first woman and person of color to direct a Star Wars film. Despite female directors contributing to Star Wars television projects, this marks a pivotal moment for inclusivity in the franchise’s cinematic realm.
In addition to Obaid-Chinoy’s project, Lucasfilm is concurrently developing two other Star Wars films: an origin story about the Force directed by James Mangold and a film by franchise veteran Dave Filoni, intended to conclude the narrative woven across television series such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.”
The Rey-centered movie, officially announced at Star Wars Celebration in April 2023, has been a topic of fervent anticipation.
