SAN JOSE, Calif (Diya TV) — More than 25,000 people gathered in downtown San Jose on Aug. 15 for AIA SWADES 2026. The celebration marked India’s 80th Independence Day with a major India Day Parade, cultural programs and community events. It also highlighted the close ties between India and the United States.
Organized by the Association of Indo-Americans, or AIA, SWADES 2026 brought together families, community groups, business leaders and elected officials. More than 50 Indian-American organizations joined the event.
More than 80 floats and marching groups traveled through downtown San Jose for the India Day Parade. They represented Indian states, cultural traditions, and community organizations from across the Bay Area.
The parade also featured an 80-foot India and USA Flag Walk and a Tiranga Walk. Music and cultural performances added to the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, thousands of spectators lined the parade route to celebrate India’s heritage.
Indian actress Taapsee Pannu served as the Grand Marshal of SWADES 2026. Pannu is known for roles that often explore women’s empowerment, social issues, and human experiences. During the parade, community members gathered along the route to welcome her and take part in the celebration.
Consul General of India Dr. Srikar Reddy attended the flag-hoisting ceremony. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo also joined the festivities.
Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen and California Assembly members Ash Kalra and Patrick Ahrens also attended. More than 40 elected officials from across Silicon Valley took part.
More than 100 children performed classical and film dances during the event. In addition, art, chess and essay competitions gave children more ways to participate.
The evening program featured Vijay Bharat, a cultural showcase highlighting dances from different parts of India.
AIA also thanked volunteers, sponsors, performers, community organizations and media partners for supporting the event. The organization credited their efforts for helping make SWADES 2026 a major Indian-American community celebration in San Jose.
AIA said its next major events will continue the organization’s cultural programming. Ganpati Boppa Morya is scheduled for Sept. 19 at Bishop Ranch in San Ramon.
The annual Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka will follow on Oct. 17 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The event will feature Mahamangala Aarti, Rath Yatra, fireworks, and Ravan Dahan.
