DETROIT, Mich. (Diya TV) — Michigan state Rep. Ranjeev Puri won reelection in District 24, defeating Republican Allison Fuller as Democrats regained control of the state House. The victory puts Puri, the party’s current House leader, in a strong position to become the chamber’s next speaker.
Unofficial Wayne County results showed Puri with 31,029 votes and Fuller with 15,857, a margin of 15,172 votes. Democrats won a House majority after Republicans controlled the chamber during the 2025–26 term. Puri is widely seen as the likely Democratic choice for speaker, but lawmakers have not yet elected him to the post. The full House chooses its speaker when the new Legislature organizes.
If elected, Puri would become the first Indian American to serve as speaker of a state House in the United States and the first Sikh American to lead the Michigan House. He first won election to the Legislature in 2020 and became House Democratic leader in 2025, when Republicans took control of the chamber. Puri represents the Canton area and has worked in Michigan’s automotive industry. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Puri addressed supporters in Detroit after the election as Democrats celebrated retaking the House. He called the result “not a ‘blue wave,’ but a ‘tsunami,’” according to Michigan Advance. He also criticized the Republican-led chamber’s record on health care, food assistance and tax policy.
A speaker’s role extends beyond presiding over floor sessions. The speaker calls the House to order, rules on procedural questions, appoints committees, refers bills to committees and controls the order in which bills come up for consideration. Those powers would give Puri a central role in setting the chamber’s agenda, though lawmakers would still have to pass legislation and the governor would have to sign it.
Indian American Impact, a political advocacy organization that supported Puri, congratulated him on his reelection and called him a longtime friend. The group said the incoming Democratic majority plans to focus on lowering costs, expanding access to health care and making housing and child care more affordable.
Those priorities will test the new majority as it prepares for the next legislative session. Puri has described affordability, housing and health care access as pressing concerns, while also pointing to community and economic development and public education as issues Democrats should address.
Puri’s reelection secures his seat for another term; his next step depends on his colleagues. If House members elect him speaker, he would lead the chamber as Democrats return to the majority and take up their policy agenda.
