WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi on Aug. 10 urged the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors to remove Postmaster General David Steiner. The Illinois Democrat accused Steiner of pursuing President Donald Trump’s mail-ballot executive order despite federal court rulings that blocked key parts of the policy.
In a letter to Board Chairman Amber F. McReynolds, Vice Chairman Derek Kan and other board members, Krishnamoorthi questioned how USPS handled the order. He also asked whether the agency stopped its efforts after federal courts stepped in.
Krishnamoorthi said Steiner has not given Congress a clear account of USPS actions. He argued that the lack of answers threatens the transparency and neutrality expected from the postmaster general.
Trump signed Executive Order 14399 on March 31. The order directed USPS to withhold mail ballots from voters whose eligibility could not be confirmed through SAVE, a federal voter database.
However, the order quickly faced legal challenges. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia sued the administration. A federal district court in Massachusetts blocked key parts of the order. Then, on July 25, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that injunction.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court on July 27 to allow the order to take effect before the November midterm elections.
According to Krishnamoorthi’s letter, Steiner told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on June 24 that USPS would withhold mail ballots from states that refused to provide requested voter data.
Krishnamoorthi said USPS should not play a role in deciding whether voters can receive ballots. He also questioned why Steiner appeared to view court rulings as the only limit on the agency’s actions.
The letter also raised questions about the Justice Department’s position before the Supreme Court. The department described the executive order as general policy guidance. It also acknowledged that USPS had not completed rules to implement the order.
Krishnamoorthi said that explanation does not match USPS actions over the past four months.
The congressman also accused Steiner of ignoring several requests for information. He said Steiner declined an invitation to appear voluntarily before the full House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Krishnamoorthi said USPS should focus on delivering ballots rather than deciding which voters qualify to receive them.
He asked the Board of Governors to remove Steiner and ensure that USPS follows federal law and court orders.
Krishnamoorthi requested a response from the board by Aug. 24, 2026.
