COLUMBIA, Mo. (Diya TV) — The University of Missouri has named Indian-origin professor Raghuraman Kannan as a Curators’ Distinguished Professor, the highest academic honor awarded to teachers and scholars at the university. The recognition highlights Kannan’s outstanding contributions to cancer research, nanotechnology, and medical innovation.

Kannan has served as a professor of radiology at the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine since 2005. He also holds the Michael J. and Sharon R. Bukstein Chair in Cancer Research and leads the Cancer Nanotechnology Lab. His work focuses on improving cancer treatment and developing targeted therapies that minimize harm to healthy tissue.

At the Cancer Nanotechnology Lab, Kannan and his team have created a library of nanoparticle-based delivery systems. These tiny carriers can deliver drugs directly to tumors while sparing healthy cells. The approach could improve treatment for ovarian, breast, pancreatic, and liver cancers.

“Our goal is to overcome common challenges in cancer therapy,” Kannan said. “These include drug resistance, immune system evasion, and delivering medication precisely where it is needed.”

Kannan’s research has attracted attention from both the scientific community and the medical industry. Seven technologies developed in his lab are patented, and several have potential applications in clinical settings. Over 55 of his papers have been published in leading journals such as Advanced Materials and ACS Nano.

In addition to his academic work, Kannan is a co-founder of four startup companies at the University of Missouri. Two of these companies, Nanoparticle Biochem Inc. and Shasun-NBI, LLC, have secured million-dollar investments. Nanoparticle Biochem Inc. received the prestigious Tibbetts award for technical innovation and economic development in 2012, presented at the White House.

Kannan’s entrepreneurial success demonstrates the practical impact of his research. By translating scientific discoveries into real-world solutions, he helps bridge the gap between laboratory research and patient care.

Kannan earned his master’s degree in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1993. He then pursued a PhD in chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, graduating in 1999 with a gold medal. His doctoral thesis earned the J.C. Ghosh Medal and a cash prize for the best PhD thesis at IISc.

Kannan’s strong academic foundation in chemistry and nanotechnology has shaped his approach to cancer research. He emphasizes innovation, precision, and translational science in all aspects of his work.
