DENVER (Diya TV) — A federal court has issued a $24.9 million judgment against Jadoo TV, Inc. and its CEO, Sajid Sohail, marking the end of a six-year lawsuit coordinated by the International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy (IBCAP). The ruling, announced Tuesday, also includes a permanent injunction that will shut down Jadoo TV’s operations worldwide by Dec. 22, 2024.
The lawsuit, which was filed in November 2018 by IBCAP member DISH Network, accused Jadoo TV and Sohail of direct, contributory, and vicarious copyright infringement. Jadoo TV was especially popular among South Asian communities in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide as it provided pirated South Asian content through set-top boxes and mobile apps.
The court had granted summary judgment on all claims in the earlier proceedings, finding that both Jadoo TV and Sohail were liable. The court held that the CEO, Sohail, was personally liable for the illegal activities carried out by the company.
Judgement included statutory damages for $14.55 million of the registered copyrighted works and $10.42 million of unregistered works. Furthermore, part of a different settlement that Jadoo TV and Sohail agreed to give away all customer lists, trademarks, and domain names of its customers to DISH Network and, meanwhile, agreed to pay the remaining $1.5 million in cash to DISH on Feb. 20, 2025.
According to executive director Chris Kuelling at IBCAP, “This judgment and settlement brings an end, at long last, to six-year-long litigation against a hugely popular South Asian illegal-content provider, Jadoo TV, and its chief, whom the court found vicariously liable for tortious damage caused by their infringement.”. “Today’s announcement sends a strong message that the end of the road for a pirate IPTV service is a significant monetary payment and loss of your entire business.”
The case was coordinated by IBCAP after it and DISH had sent numerous notices to Jadoo TV over copyright violations. The IBCAP lab played a key role in gathering evidence for the case, which was prosecuted by DISH’s outside counsel, Hagan Noll & Boyle LLC.
The South Asian content-distribution service operated by Jadoo TV had a huge customer base when the lawsuit was filed because it was providing illegal services through its widely available “Jadoo” set-top boxes and mobile apps. Among the terms of the decision is that Jadoo TV must end all its operations worldwide by the end of December.
