CHICAGO (Diya TV) — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted India’s growing global role during a series of meetings with Indian Americans and U.S. business leaders in Chicago.
Sitharaman met members of the Indian American community at the Consulate General of India. She praised the diaspora for helping strengthen India’s global standing and ties with other countries.
She said Indian Americans remain an important force in building India’s soft power. Their work, connections and contributions continue to support stronger relations between India and the wider world.
Sitharaman also discussed India’s growing potential in autonomous defense technology. She said India can serve not only as a major market but also as a global center for developing, testing and manufacturing autonomous defense systems.
According to the Finance Ministry, India can use its strong technology base, skilled workforce and expanding innovation ecosystem to support this sector. The country’s growing focus on advanced technology could also create new opportunities for international partnerships.
During her visit, Sitharaman met Mark S. Hoplamazian, president and CEO of Hyatt. Their talks focused on Hyatt’s continued commitment to India and possible expansion in the country.
India’s tourism and hospitality sector has entered a new phase of growth. As a result, companies such as Hyatt see opportunities to expand their presence across the country.
Sitharaman pointed to improvements in India’s connectivity and infrastructure. These developments are opening new tourism and business destinations.
She also highlighted the growing importance of Tier-II and Tier-III cities. These cities are becoming important centers for economic activity and travel. Better infrastructure could further support tourism, investment and local development.
Earlier, Sitharaman met Brandon Tseng, co-founder and president of Shield AI. Their discussions focused on the company’s work in India and opportunities to increase cooperation.
Sitharaman also met Monish Patolawala, executive vice president and chief financial officer of ADM. They discussed ADM’s long-standing presence in India and possible opportunities for further engagement.
Sitharaman welcomed ADM’s investments in India and its growing partnerships with farmers.
She also noted ADM’s work with Farmer Producer Organizations. In addition, she highlighted the company’s global technology and artificial intelligence capabilities in Bengaluru.
Sitharaman said India can strengthen its agricultural sector by building closer links between businesses and farmers. She also pointed to opportunities in regenerative and sustainable agriculture.
