MIAMISBURG, Ohio (Diya TV) — Ohio is observing its second Hindu Heritage Month under a state law recognizing Hindu Americans’ contributions to the state’s culture, education, faith and civic life.
The law designates October as the annual observance. It took effect in April last year, making this October the second since the designation became law.
Former Republican state Sen. Niraj Antani of Miamisburg advanced the proposal in the Ohio Senate. Republican state Rep. Adam Mathews of Lebanon and Democratic state Rep. Anita Somani of Dublin introduced companion legislation in the House, giving the effort bipartisan support.
Lawmakers ultimately included the designation in a broader bill sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Daniel P. Troy. The legislature approved the amended measure in December, and Gov. Mike DeWine signed it the following January.
When introducing the House proposal, Mathews said the recognition reflected Ohio’s diverse population and the importance of acknowledging different cultural backgrounds.
The sponsors said they selected October because Hindu festivals, including Navaratri and Diwali, often fall during the month. Their proposal sought to recognize the community’s contributions and establish a recurring statewide observance.
The enacted provision establishes the designation without requiring schools, local governments or community organizations to hold specific events.
