WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Former President Barack Obama congratulated Democrats after they won control of the House and Senate, then challenged the party to show voters what its new majorities can accomplish. In a Nov. 4 post on X, he said Americans wanted less divisive politics and leaders who offer practical solutions.

Obama praised candidates who ran in every region, including places Democrats once viewed as long shots. He also thanked election workers and volunteers from both parties. With President Donald Trump still in office for two more years, Obama urged Democrats to act where they hold power, prevent further damage and prepare for the future.

His post followed a series of late-campaign rallies in states where Democrats made major gains. On Oct. 24, Obama appeared in Cleveland with Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and Senate candidate Sherrod Brown. Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, while Brown beat Sen. Jon Husted to return to the Senate. At the Cleveland Public Auditorium, thousands gathered to hear Obama argue that voters needed Congress to check the administration. He called the midterms “the circuit breaker in the system.”

Obama held a second rally that day at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, where he campaigned for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. Both won. El-Sayed’s victory will make him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. Obama acknowledged that El-Sayed had criticized some of his past decisions, but said differences over policy should not prevent them from working toward shared goals. In his speech, Obama criticized the Iran war and tariffs, linking both to higher costs for Americans.

Four days later, Obama traveled to Morrow, Georgia, to campaign with Sen. Jon Ossoff and gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms. The rally drew thousands to the Arena at Southlake. Obama focused on living costs and government corruption and urged voters to back Democrats who could act as a check on Trump. Ossoff won reelection, and Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson to become the first Black woman elected governor in the United States.

The campaign appearances gave Obama a role as a high-profile surrogate in states where Democrats needed turnout and persuadable voters. His speeches criticized Trump’s handling of the economy, the war with Iran and the use of presidential power, while presenting Democratic candidates as alternatives focused on household costs and public accountability.

Democratic control of both chambers will give the party chairmanships, committee authority and greater power to set the congressional agenda when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. Those powers will let Democrats investigate administration policies and challenge Trump’s legislative priorities. Obama’s post-election message focused on the next step: turning those powers into changes voters can see.
