NEW YORK (Diya TV) — U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley met this week with Syed Akbaruddin, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, the two held talks at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN where they discussed the status and progress of the U.S.-India relationship.
“We had a great meeting w/ Indian Amb. Akbaruddin. We discussed India’s economy, peacekeeping reform & the partnership b/w India & the US,” Haley tweeted after the Thursday session.
Haley, the former governor of South Carolina who became the first Indian American to ever hold a Cabinet position in a presidential administration, said she discussed a wide range of issues related to the US and India.
“We shared perspectives on how India-US can work together at the UN in line with our growing ties,” Ambassador Akbaruddin told the Indo-Asian News Service. The two diplomats discussed “India’s economic and anti-corruption reforms that have helped businesses and spurred growth” and “close ties between the two countries and opportunities to further the partnership between the US and India at the UN.”
India have been tirelessly lobbying for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Former U.S. President Barack Obama endorsed the nation’s application, however, President Donald Trump has remained silent on the issue. No information was provided on whether or not the matter was discussed between Haley and Akbaruddin.
“I want to thank Ambassador Nikki Haley for her outstanding leadership, and for acting as my personal envoy on the Security Council,” President Trump said of Haley’s work thus far at the White House on Monday. “She’s doing a fantastic job.”
The United Kingdom and France have additionally supported India’s application for admission to the security council. “More than 50 speakers shared their suggestions, perspectives and concerns. Many favored bolstering representation for such emerging Powers as Brazil, Germany, India and Japan,” a UN General Assembly statement from a 2016 meeting of the council read.
During the meeting, Akbaruddin said, “Global governance structures had to be updated and adjusted to be able to deal with new security challenges.”
India are one of the United Nations’s founding members, and has provided the maximum amount of troops to UN missions since the unit’s inception. “So far India has taken part in 49 Peacekeeping missions with a total contribution exceeding 180,000 troops and a significant number of police personnel having been deployed,” according to a statement on the India’s UN Mission website.
