BADHAIYATAL, Nepal (Diya TV) — Anju Devi Shrestha (known as Dipti) and Suprita Gurung, both aged 33, have entered the annals of history as the first lesbian couple to legally register their marriage in Nepal, marking a groundbreaking moment in South Asian LGBTQ+ rights.

Their union, recognized in Jamuna Rural Municipality, follows Nepal’s landmark decision to legalize such unions.

The couple met in high school and remained together despite legal hurdles and challenges to societal norms.

Their marriage follows in the footsteps of Maya Gurung and Surendra Pandey, the first same-sex couple legally recognized in Nepal. The Supreme Court’s interim order in June 2023 paved the way for such unions, signaling a significant shift in the country’s legal landscape.

The registration of Dipti and Suprita’s marriage has been met with widespread support from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, who see it as a crucial step forward in the fight for equality and recognition. It underscores the efforts of activists who have campaigned for over two decades to secure rights for sexual and gender minority communities.
