NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Musaafer, Houston’s Michelin-starred Indian fine dining restaurant, has opened its second location in New York City. The new outpost is located in the historic Hope Building in TriBeCa at 131 Duane Street. The move brings Musaafer’s signature blend of luxury, artistry, and elevated Indian cuisine to one of the world’s most competitive culinary cities.
The New York location spans 10,000 square feet across two levels. It continues Musaafer’s commitment to immersive design and culinary innovation. The space was developed in collaboration with Delhi-based Chromed Studio. Its interiors draw inspiration from iconic Indian landmarks, including the Hawa Mahal and Taj Mahal.
Upon entering, guests encounter towering marble walls and patterned glasswork. Antique pieces line the walls, and lotus-shaped chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The standout feature is the Sheesh Mahal, or Palace of Mirrors, a semi-private dining area adorned with thousands of hand-cut mirrored pieces arranged in intricate patterns. The design blends traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, creating a unique and opulent atmosphere.
Musaafer’s menu combines Houston favorites with New York exclusives. Popular dishes returning from Houston include lychee ceviche, coriander shrimp, beef vindaloo, and the butter chicken experience. The New York menu also features special items such as the Nihari Birria Taco, made with slow-cooked pulled lamb shank, Indian cheddar, red onion, and bone marrow consommé. Guests can enjoy Chaanp lamb chops with beetroot dust or Khasi Black Sesame Cod with ginger congee and golden garlic.
The restaurant’s cocktail program complements the cuisine with inventive drinks. Signature cocktails include the Truffle Master, featuring Milagro Blanco fat-washed with truffle oil, Lapsang Souchong tea cordial, Amontillado sherry, imitation Tonka mist, and magic jelly. Another highlight is the Bombay Velvet, made with Hendrick’s gin, Lillet Blanc, kewra flower water, lime, and basil, served in a custom teacup.
Musaafer’s expansion reflects the growing recognition of Indian fine dining on the international stage. Since opening in Houston five years ago, the restaurant has set a high standard for modern Indian cuisine. It was one of the first restaurants in Houston to earn a Michelin star in the inaugural Texas guide.
“When we first imagined bringing Musaafer to New York City, we were excited to introduce our artistry to new audiences,” said CEO Mithu Malik. “The name Musaafer comes from the Hindi and Urdu word for ‘traveler.’ We can think of no better place to take the next step than here, where the city’s energy and shared appreciation for memorable experiences will match and enhance the essence of Musaafer.”
Corporate chef Mayank Istwal emphasized the restaurant’s culinary philosophy. “At Musaafer, we strive to reinvent what Indian cuisine can be,” he said. “India is vast and multicultural, and our menu reflects and honors that diversity. Every dish tells its own story, and we are dedicated to spotlighting the playfulness of Indian cuisine through our blend of tradition and modernity.”
Musaafer’s New York location aims to position modern Indian gastronomy alongside the city’s most acclaimed dining destinations. From its luxurious interiors to its innovative menu, the restaurant promises diners a memorable culinary journey.
