PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Swami Vivekananda on his Punya Tithi or death anniversary, calling the spiritual leader’s thoughts and vision a guiding light for the nation. Swami Vivekananda, known for inspiring generations with his wisdom, continues to influence India’s path of service, compassion, and pride in its heritage.
In his message, Modi said Swami Vivekananda’s ideas remain relevant in modern times. He emphasized the monk’s role in instilling confidence in India’s cultural identity and history.
“I bow to Swami Vivekananda Ji on his Punya Tithi. His thoughts and vision for our society remains our guiding light,” Modi posted on X. “He ignited a sense of pride and confidence in our history and cultural heritage. He also emphasised on walking the path of service and compassion.”
Swami Vivekananda is remembered for promoting Indian philosophy across the world. He stressed youth empowerment, national pride, and spiritual awakening.
While on an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi attended a traditional dinner hosted by the country’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The dinner served as a cultural bridge between India and Trinidad & Tobago, which shares strong ties with Indian heritage.
During the meal, food was served on a Sohari leaf. This leaf holds deep cultural value in Trinidad and Tobago, particularly among citizens of Indian descent. It is commonly used during religious festivals and family celebrations.
Modi acknowledged the gesture in a post on X. “The dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had food served on a Sohari leaf, which is of great cultural significance to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, especially those with Indian roots,” he wrote. “Here, food is often served on this leaf during festivals and other special programmes.”
At the same dinner in Port of Spain, Prime Minister Modi met Trinidadian singer Rana Mohip. Mohip had previously performed the devotional song “Vaishnava Jana To” during the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi.
Modi praised Mohip for his dedication to Indian music and cultural traditions. “At the dinner in Port of Spain, met Mr. Rana Mohip, who had sung ‘Vaishnava Jana To’ when we marked the 150th Jayanti of Mahatma Gandhi a few years ago. His passion towards Indian music and culture is appreciable,” Modi wrote on X.
The meeting highlighted how Indian culture continues to resonate globally, especially in nations with a significant Indian diaspora.
