NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit set to take place later this month in Kananaskis, Canada, following a congratulatory phone call from Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney.
During their conversation, Modi congratulated Carney on his recent election victory and expressed gratitude for the formal invitation to the G7 gathering, scheduled for later in June. The leaders discussed their mutual commitment to strengthening India-Canada relations, underscoring shared democratic values and the enduring people-to-people ties that unite the two nations.
“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada,” Modi wrote in a post on X. “Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”
Modi’s office also released an official statement confirming the call and emphasizing the leaders’ shared vision for collaborative engagement. “The two leaders acknowledged the deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada and reaffirmed their commitment to work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,” the statement read.
Carney, who assumed office earlier this month, made the outreach as part of his initial diplomatic engagements, signaling a fresh chapter in Canada’s relationship with India. His call to Modi marks one of his first high-level international conversations since taking office, highlighting India’s key role on the global stage.
The G7 Summit, which brings together the world’s leading advanced economies, will take place in Kananaskis, Alberta—a picturesque mountain resort area previously used for the 2002 G8 Summit. While India is not a member of the G7, it has regularly been invited as a guest participant due to its growing geopolitical and economic influence. This year’s summit will focus on global economic stability, climate action, digital governance, and democratic resilience.
The reaffirmation of Modi’s participation comes amid efforts by both countries to recalibrate bilateral ties, which have seen tensions in recent years. Nevertheless, both leaders signaled an intent to move forward constructively.
“India and Canada are bound not only by economic and strategic interests, but also by a rich tapestry of personal, cultural, and educational connections,” said a senior Indian government official familiar with the call, speaking on background.
The upcoming summit will offer an opportunity for both leaders to engage in bilateral discussions on the sidelines, along with interactions with other G7 leaders, including those from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and Italy, as well as the European Union.
Observers see Modi’s confirmed attendance as a strategic step to strengthen India’s role as a bridge between the Global North and the Global South, especially amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
