BROOKLINE, Mass. (Diya TV) — Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a leading physicist and director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was shot and killed at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, authorities said Tuesday. The 47-year-old scientist was found Monday night in his apartment and died at a local hospital the following day, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said. Police have launched a homicide investigation, and no suspects were in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

Loureiro joined MIT in 2016 and was named last year to lead the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. The lab, one of MIT’s largest, has more than 250 employees working across seven buildings. Under Loureiro’s leadership, the center aimed to advance research in clean energy and nuclear fusion technology.

“When he led the center, he brought energy, passion, and vision,” said Dennis Whyte, a former director of the lab and MIT engineering professor. “He shone as a mentor, teacher, and leader, and he was admired for his compassionate and articulate manner.”

The MIT president, Sally Kornbluth, called Loureiro’s death a “shocking loss” to the campus community. Students and colleagues remembered him for his dedication to science and education. Some of his students visited his home on Tuesday to pay their respects.

Loureiro was born in Viseu, a city in central Portugal, and studied in Lisbon before earning a doctorate in London. Before joining MIT, he was a researcher at a nuclear fusion institute in Lisbon. He was married and had a family.

“It’s not hyperbole to say MIT is where you go to find solutions to humanity’s biggest problems,” Loureiro said when he became director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. “Fusion energy will change the course of human history.”

Authorities in Brookline are actively investigating the shooting. A 22-year-old Boston University student who lives near Loureiro’s apartment told The Boston Globe she heard three loud noises Monday evening and feared it was gunfire. “I had never heard anything so loud, so I assumed they were gunshots,” she said. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office has not released details on the motive. Investigators are reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses.

The homicide comes days after a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, about 50 miles away, where two students were killed and nine others injured. The FBI said Tuesday that it had found no connection between the Providence and Brookline shootings.

The U.S. ambassador to Portugal, John J. Arrigo, expressed condolences online, honoring Loureiro’s contributions to science and leadership at MIT. Loureiro’s work focused on advancing nuclear fusion, a technology that many scientists believe could provide a clean and sustainable energy source for the world.
