LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Mindy Kaling says her recent weight loss came from a desire to stay healthy for her children, not from vanity or public pressure.

In a new interview with Bustle, the actress and producer explained that becoming a mother changed the way she thinks about health and fitness. Kaling, 46, said she wants to “live at least 20 more years” for her three children.

The former The Office star is the mother of daughter Katherine, 8, son Spencer, 5, and daughter Anne, 2. She said her focus now centers on long-term wellness and avoiding serious health issues that run in her family.

Kaling shared that her reasons for losing weight have changed over time. Earlier in her life, she linked weight loss to appearance. Now, she says, her goals are different.“When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons,” Kaling told Bustle. “Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes.”

The Inside Out actress said diabetes affects both sides of her family. She explained that she wants to lower her health risks and improve her longevity.“I had it on both sides of my family,” she said. “Trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me. And that’s my goal.”Kaling also said she feels healthier than she has in years. While she does not wake up every day focused on her appearance, she said she feels strong and healthy.

Kaling has faced constant attention online since fans noticed her slimmer figure. Some social media users praised her transformation, while others questioned her decision to lose more than 40 pounds.

The actress said she understands why some fans feel emotional when celebrities change their appearance.“It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight,” Kaling said in the interview. She added that audiences often connect deeply with celebrities as they first knew them on screen. Changes in appearance can affect that connection.

“You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them,” she said. “Of course, it’s never a joy to be scrutinized, but I also truly understand it, as someone who consumes pop culture.”Kaling’s comments reflect a wider conversation in Hollywood about celebrity weight loss and public expectations. Many stars face intense scrutiny over their bodies, whether they gain or lose weight.

In recent years, speculation has grown around celebrities and the use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy have become popular topics across entertainment news and social media. Kaling has repeatedly denied using weight loss drugs. Instead, she said she changed her eating habits by focusing on moderation rather than strict dieting.

In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kaling explained that restrictive diets never worked well for her.“I eat what I like to eat,” she said at the time. “If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it.”The actress began her weight loss journey in 2020. Since then, she has spoken openly about balancing work, parenting, and personal health. In 2023, Kaling revealed that her doctor told her she was “the healthiest” she had been in years. She credited healthier habits and a more balanced lifestyle for the change.

Kaling remains one of Hollywood’s busiest creators. Beyond acting, she continues to produce television projects and voice roles while raising her three children. Fans first knew her for playing Kelly Kapoor on The Office before she created and starred in The Mindy Project. Over the years, she has built a strong following through her humor, honesty, and relatable personality.
