LANSING, Michigan (Diya TV) —  The states of Michigan and Mississippi have declared October 2024 as Hindu Heritage Month to recognize the significant cultural, economic, and community contributions Hindu Americans have made. These two states are part of a statewide trend; over 20 other states in the country have also dedicated October in honor of the heritage of the Hindu community and its traditions and immense value to the United States. The gubernatorial declarations, which Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed and Mississippi officials signed, are another step forward in the quest to increase public awareness of the contributions of Hindu Americans, as well as for increased intercultural understanding.

This year’s event was organized by groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, an affiliate of the World Hindu Council in India, a key participant in a larger effort by Hindu groups to secure national recognition for Hindu Heritage Month. Representatives from VHPA said that local leaders requested similar proclamations for good works to celebrate the positive contributions of Hindus within society in America. In comments, officials pointed out how values such as doing good for the community, family values, and respect for diversity have enhanced communities.

As the governor’s proclamation regarding Michigan reflects, Hinduism has “diverse and ancient history” and impacts Michigan communities. Her office commemorated the Hindu American community for “values such as service, tolerance, and spirituality.” The historical links between Hinduism and the multicultural community in Michigan, where the work of temples and cultural centers is essential toward fostering community engagement, are also recognized.

Mississippi’s declaration gives public education for Hindu culture and philosophy great importance. Community leaders and proponents in both the states predict that this celebration will increase public awareness of and interest in Hindu traditions. Temple tours, traditional dances, heritage walks, and education programs are likely to be part of these month-long festivals. The organizers plan to use the month as an opportunity for providing enlightenment education on Hindu philosophies, spiritualities, and practices to Hindus as well as non-Hindus in America.

Campaigns for Hindu Heritage Month have been under way for years and have been long supported by a number of organizations whose goal is to promote Hindu contributions to the U.S. economy, social structure, and educational systems. A national proclamation for Hindu Heritage Month is being called for by leaders who are urging the federal government.
