NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — S M Sehgal Foundation bagged two grand honors together this week, marking a milestone in its contributions to rural development and water conservation in India. For, the foundation was conferred the 5th National Water Award in the “Best Civil Society” category instituted by Jal Shakti Ministry and also bagged a Fortune Leadership Award in the “Most Trusted NGO” category. Such awards highlight the efforts of the foundation toward activities that are community-led towards fulfilling some of the basic requirements in water management, agriculture, and public health.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, awarded the National Water Award at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to the top recipients in nine categories. The event saw the presence of Cabinet Minister C R Patil, along with other dignitaries, the state water ministers and their secretaries, which demonstrated the success of 38 chosen organizations from more than 600 applicants. Ministry of Jal Shakti Secretary Vini Mahajan was of the view that the awards appreciated organizations, such as the Sehgal Foundation, towards promoting sustainable management of water resources.

The S M Sehgal Foundation is a new initiative dedicated to dealing with the challenges of water scarcity and quality. The foundation has thus adopted a host of initiatives to create space for rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the restoration of traditional water bodies. Its Water Management Program promotes safe drinking water, WASH practices, and supports communities in adapting to innovative, cost-effective technologies. Such efforts have enhanced water security among rural communities and encouraged participation and ownership in the community towards environmental stewardship.

According to reports, Anjali Makhija, CEO and trustee of the foundation, said she is deeply thankful for receiving the awards. The CEO added that the organization is successful because of its partners and the rural communities supporting these initiatives. “These awards inspire us to continue our mission,” she said, adding, “Foundation’s vision – enhancing social, economic, and environmental resilience.”.

Since its inception 25 years ago, the S M Sehgal Foundation has been working in 13 states across India to make a positive difference to the lives of over 5 million persons in 12,700 villages, through programs in food security, community-led development, and education for better quality of life among rural peoples.

The latest accolades have been an affirmation of the role that the foundation plays in the lives in the rural regions of India and, more importantly, show a national commitment towards sustainable development goals.
