WALSALL, England (Diya TV) — A 20-year-old woman of Indian heritage was allegedly raped in a racially aggravated attack in Walsall, a town in England’s West Midlands region, police said on Monday. Officers arrested a 32-year-old man early Monday morning after a major manhunt that followed the assault on Saturday evening.

Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation, called the arrest a “significant development.” He said the investigation remains active and that the woman is receiving full support from specially trained officers. Police confirmed that the crime is being treated as a racially motivated attack.

Authorities were called to the Park Hall area of Walsall on Saturday night after reports of a woman in distress. Officers launched an urgent appeal to the public on Sunday, releasing CCTV footage of the suspect. The attacker was described as a white man in his 30s, with short hair, wearing dark clothing.

The suspect was detained around 7 a.m. Monday in the Perry Barr area of Walsall, according to West Midlands Police. He remains in custody and is being questioned. Police said the woman had suffered an “absolutely appalling attack.”

According to reports, the woman screamed for help as the attacker chased her into her home, broke down the door, and assaulted her. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday. The Daily Mail reported that the attacker hurled racial slurs at the woman during the assault.

Dabinderjit Singh, a senior adviser for the Sikh Federation (UK), confirmed that the victim is a Punjabi woman. “A neighbour also heard her screams during the vicious attack,” he said. Singh called the incident deeply disturbing and urged the police to act quickly.

Detective Tyrer thanked those who came forward with information following the police appeal. “Our investigation will continue today, and our priority is the woman who was the subject of this attack,” he said. “She has been updated this morning and will continue to receive support.”

Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police said his officers are working closely with the community to address safety concerns. “Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and concern that this awful attack will cause,” he said. “There will be an increased policing presence in the coming days.”

Community leaders expressed alarm over the attack, which came just weeks after the racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman in nearby Oldbury. Police said they are not linking the two cases at this stage. However, local groups fear a pattern of racially motivated assaults targeting women of South Asian background.

“The attacker apparently broke down the door of the house where she was living,” the Sikh Federation UK said in a statement. “West Midlands Police have now had two racially aggravated rapes of young women in their 20s in the last two months and urgently need to find those responsible.”

British Sikh MPs Preet Kaur Gill and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi condemned the Walsall attack. Gill, Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the reports. “This follows the horrifying reports of a racially aggravated rape of a Sikh girl in Oldbury. The repeated pattern of violence against women in our region, compounded by hate and racial overtones, is deeply disturbing,” she said.

Dhesi, Labour MP for Slough, said, “After the shocking racially aggravated rape in Oldbury that the Sikh community is still reeling from, yet another in Walsall. We’re thinking of the victim and need to help the police. Spreading of hate has real consequences.”

Zarah Sultana, MP for Coventry South, also condemned the assault. “These horrifying attacks show how racism and misogyny feed each other — fuelled by the rise of fascism and hate,” she wrote on social media. “We must stand together — against racism, fascism, and misogyny — and fight for equality and justice.”

The West Midlands Police continue to gather evidence, review CCTV footage, and speak with witnesses. Officers are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward. Detectives believe public cooperation could provide a crucial breakthrough in the case.

Authorities said the victim is recovering with support from police and community services. Investigators have assured residents that they are doing everything possible to bring justice to the survivor and restore confidence across the local community.
