GENEVA (Diya TV) — The University of Newcastle, Australia, has awarded its prestigious International Leadership Award to Dr. Shyam Bishen as part of the 2025 Alumni Excellence Awards. The honor recognizes Bishen’s global impact on healthcare leadership and his dedication to building stronger, more equitable health systems around the world.
Dr. Bishen currently serves as the Head of the Centre for Health & Healthcare at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland. In this role, he brings together government leaders, CEOs, and international directors to strengthen health systems, prepare for global pandemics, and close health equity gaps.
With more than 20 years of leadership experience, Bishen has played a vital role in shaping international health strategies. His work has focused on advancing global equity, creating resilient systems, and coordinating responses to major public health crises such as COVID-19.
Bishen’s leadership at the World Economic Forum has positioned him as one of the leading voices in global health policy. He helps design collaborative frameworks that guide how countries and industries respond to health challenges.

Before his global leadership role, Dr. Bishen built a strong academic and professional foundation across several continents. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Newcastle and later pursued an MBA from Washington University in the United States. He also completed executive leadership training at Harvard University.
Originally from India, Bishen is an alumnus of Lucknow University, where his academic journey began. Early in his career, he entered academia as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, contributing to teaching and research before transitioning into global health and policy.
Reflecting on the honor, Bishen shared how his career across five continents influenced his understanding of leadership. “Living and working across five continents and doing business in over 50 countries has shaped my view of leadership in profound ways,” he said.
