MADISON, Ala (Diya TV) — The Rocket City Trash Pandas have added a major name to their lineup. Arjun Nimmala, one of baseball’s top young prospects, now calls Rocket City home after a major trade between the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Angels acquired Nimmala as the main return in the trade for pitcher José Soriano. The move gives the organization a major boost in its farm system. It also puts MLB’s No. 43 overall prospect in the Rocket City spotlight.

Nimmala immediately became the Angels’ top-ranked position player. The 20-year-old shortstop brings speed, power and a smooth swing. He also gives the Angels another young player to build around as the team looks toward the future.

Nimmala quickly showed why the Angels value him. He faced White Sox prospect Lucas Gordon and drove a 1-1 fastball into right-center field for an RBI double. The ball bounced off the wall.

One inning later, Nimmala struck again. He hit another fastball against right-hander Jarold Rosario. This time, his hit reached nearly the same area of the field. The swing brought home two more runs.

The strong start in Rocket City adds to an eventful 2026 season for Nimmala. He began the year at the Blue Jays’ spring complex in Florida. He then opened the season with High-A Vancouver in Canada.

Nimmala earned a promotion to Double-A in early May. He traveled about 3,200 miles to join New Hampshire. However, a right hamstring injury soon interrupted his season.

Nimmala returned to Florida to recover. He played for the Rookie-level Florida Complex League and Single-A Dunedin during his rehabilitation. After that, he returned to New Hampshire and made 15 appearances before the Angels acquired him.

Toronto selected Nimmala three years ago in the first round of the MLB Draft. He made history as the first first-generation Indian American selected in the first round. He also entered the draft at only 17 years old.

That early selection gave Nimmala plenty of time to develop. His power has remained a major part of his game. In particular, the Angels have focused on helping him produce strong exit velocities more often.

Nimmala lowered his strikeout rate during the 2025 season with Vancouver. However, that improvement came with less extra-base power. This year, he has combined better contact with stronger power.

On June 30, Nimmala hit three balls at 108 mph or faster during one Florida Complex League game. He also posted a 32.6% line-drive rate in the Double-A Eastern League. That mark leads the league among players with at least 130 plate appearances.

Nimmala has also handled a difficult 2026 schedule with consistency. He remains younger than many pitchers he faces. Yet, he has avoided a long hitting slump since mid-April. His .832 OPS also puts him on pace for the best mark of his career.

He did leave a recent game after suffering a cut on his left hand during a rundown near home plate. However, the injury is not expected to keep him out for a significant period.

Nimmala is not the only new prospect joining Rocket City. The Angels also acquired catcher Jacob Cozart in the Jo Adell trade with the Cleveland Guardians. Cozart ranks No. 19 on the Angels’ Top 30 prospects list.

Cozart went in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft after playing at Clemson. He has built a strong reputation for his defense behind the plate. Still, he also showed his power soon after joining the Angels.

Cozart hit his first home run with the organization earlier this week. As a result, Rocket City now has two notable young players who could play important roles in the Angels’ future.

The arrival of Nimmala gives the Rocket City Trash Pandas a fresh spark. It also gives fans a chance to watch one of baseball’s most promising young hitters develop at the Double-A level.
