NEW YORK (Diya TV) — The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.
Rubio announced the invitation after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20,” Rubio said. “We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president but with other world leaders. We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia appreciated the invitation and would consider it through diplomatic channels. Putin has not confirmed whether he will attend.
The summit could provide another opportunity for Putin to meet President Donald Trump as the administration continues its efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. Rubio said Washington remains open to talks with Moscow despite stalled diplomatic efforts.
Trump and Putin last met in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025. The meeting did not produce an agreement to end the war.
Rubio’s meeting with Lavrov followed Trump’s talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations on Tuesday. Ukraine has continued seeking U.S. military and diplomatic support as Russian attacks persist.
Putin has not attended a G20 leaders’ summit in person since 2019. Other Russian officials have represented Moscow at recent meetings following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russia remains a G20 member despite its removal from the Group of Eight in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. The G20 brings together major economies to discuss economic and international policy.
The Kremlin said it would decide on Putin’s attendance closer to the summit.
