BARCELONA, Spain (Diya TV) — Indian driver Kush Maini delivered a commanding performance in the FIA Formula 2 Barcelona Sprint Race, securing his first victory of the 2026 season and strengthening his position in one of motorsport’s most competitive development series.

Driving for ART Grand Prix, Maini started second on the grid and seized the lead before the first corner at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. He controlled the race from the front and crossed the finish line in 39 minutes, 55.725 seconds. He finished 7.269 seconds ahead of MP Motorsport’s Gabriele Minì, while Campos Racing’s Nikola Tsolov claimed third place.

Maini entered the Barcelona Sprint Race determined to convert strong pace into a result. He achieved exactly that with an aggressive but clean start. Starting alongside reverse-grid polesitter Noel León, Maini reacted quickly when the lights went out. He moved into the lead within the opening meters and immediately began building a gap over the chasing pack.

The Indian driver avoided mistakes and managed his tires effectively throughout the 26-lap race. Once he moved out of DRS range, he controlled the pace and never looked under serious pressure from the drivers behind him. The victory marked Maini’s first Formula 2 win of the 2026 season. It also highlighted his ability to execute a race weekend at a high level in a championship where small margins often determine results.

ART Grand Prix provided Maini with a strong package throughout the weekend. The team showed impressive pace from the start of the Sprint Race. Maini recorded the fastest lap of the race on Lap 4. Although Tsolov briefly reduced the gap during the middle stages, Maini quickly responded and restored his advantage.

Behind him, the battle for second place intensified. Minì eventually overtook Tsolov and secured the runner-up position. By then, however, Maini had already built a comfortable lead.

After the race, Maini praised his team’s efforts.

“Won it from P2 on the grid. ART has given me a great car, and they’ve been giving me a great car all year, so they really deserve it, and I’m really glad to give them the win,” Maini said. The result rewarded both driver and team after several rounds of hard work.

Maini’s success carries significance beyond a single Sprint Race victory. Formula 2 serves as the final major stepping stone before Formula 1. Strong performances in the championship often influence future opportunities and career progression. The 25-year-old driver is competing in his fourth Formula 2 season. He has previously raced for Campos Racing, Invicta Racing, and DAMS Lucas Oil before joining ART Grand Prix.

His experience was shown in Barcelona. He made a decisive move at the start, maintained a consistent pace, and avoided unnecessary risks. For Indian motorsport fans, the win provides another positive moment on the international stage. Maini remains one of the country’s leading racing talents and continues to build his reputation in European motorsport.

The Barcelona round also shaped the 2026 FIA Formula 2 championship battle. After five rounds, Minì leads the standings with 86 points. Tsolov sits second with 80 points, while Rafael Câmara holds third place with 69 points.

Maini moved to ninth in the standings with 41 points following his Sprint Race victory.

Although he remains outside the immediate title fight, the result gives him valuable momentum heading into the next phase of the season. Consistent performances in qualifying, Sprint Races, and Feature Races will be crucial as the championship continues across Europe.

Maini’s Barcelona triumph was not the result of penalties, retirements or unusual circumstances. He earned the win through a strong start, consistent pace, and disciplined race management.
