NEW YORK (Diya TV) — During a reception Thursday hosted by various members of New York’s Indian American community, newly minted Consul General of India to New York, Riva Gangly Das addressed her hosts, Justices of the New York Supreme Court and Tom Suozzi, former executive of Nassau County, who is running for congress and has promised to join the India Caucus if he is elected.

During her address, Das spoke candidly about strengthening the Indo-U.S. bond via trade, culture and exchange programs for education and justice systems. Before an assembled crowd which included New York Supreme Court Justice Steven Bucaria, Justice Ruth Balkins and Justice Denise Sher, Das also shared news of the attempt to make the Indian judiciary transparent with online records.

“The judges who attended the event welcome the initiative of forming delegations. We could explore the possibility of putting together a program with them.”

She also found time to address the intent to increase the participation of Indian-Americans in the domestic projects back home, including “Make in India,” a campaign started by the Indian government.

“There is a lot of potential that the Indian American community has in terms of investing in India. We are promoting new avenues for trade between the communities,” Das said.

Das also said the consulate is promoting exchange programs through the use of education and the Hindi language.

“We are supporting various Hindi organizations that are working towards preservation of Hindi language here. We often come across Indian Americans who say they do not want to lose touch with their roots. So, we are promoting Hindi language and also dealing with many documents in Hindi.”
