RIO DE JANIERO (Diya TV) — The Indian tennis duo of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna were defeated 4-6, 6-7 by Lukasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in their first-round matchup of play at the Rio Olympics.
The first set lasted just over 30 minutes, the second set nearly an hour. Both were played at the Olympic Tennis Centre. For Paes, it’s his record-setting seventh Olympic appearance for India, ending on a disappointing note for the esteemed veteran.
He and Bopanna converted both their break points, but gave away seven break points during the first set. Additionally, the Indian pair committed 18 unforced errors, this is comparison to the 10 Kubot and Matkowski committed during the first set, where they won three of seven break points and emerged victorious 6-4.
The second set, as revealed by the time, was much more tightly contested — both teams retained their serves, stretching the match into a tie-breaker.
Paes and Bopanna ultimately fell in the tie-breaker, losing 8-6. They won just 59 points of the 132 points awarded in the match.
The Polish pair will square off against the winners of the match between eighth seeded Spanish pair of Roberto Agut Bautista and David Ferrer and Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol and Radek Stepanek in the second round.
