LUDHIANA, India (Diya TV) — The killing of Punjabi singer Yashinder Kaur has sparked a cross-border investigation that now stretches from India to Canada. Police in India continue to investigate the case after the 29-year-old singer disappeared in May. Her family now wants Canadian authorities to help bring the main suspect back to face justice.
Kaur went missing on May 13 after leaving her home in Punjab. Six days later, police recovered her car from a canal near Ludhiana. Divers later found her body inside the vehicle. Investigators said she suffered gunshot wounds to her head and chest.
Since then, detectives have focused on 37-year-old Sukhwinder Singh Brar, a Calgary-based contractor who reportedly maintained a long-distance relationship with Kaur for about five years. Police believe Brar fled India through Nepal only hours after the killing. However, authorities have not yet filed murder charges against him because the investigation remains active.
The case has drawn attention in both India and Canada because of Brar’s reported ties to Calgary. According to family members, Kaur believed Brar planned to marry her. They said he regularly traveled to India, and the couple spent time together with relatives during his 37th birthday celebration in January.
At that gathering, relatives said Brar expressed his intention to marry the singer. As a result, Kaur’s family believed the relationship was moving toward marriage.
However, the situation changed in the spring. According to relatives, Kaur discovered that Brar already had a wife and children living in Calgary. Family members said she learned the truth after calling him in Canada, and his wife answered the phone.
Her mother, Daljeet Kaur, told CBC News that her daughter deeply trusted Brar and cared for him. The revelation shocked the family and raised concerns about the relationship.
On the night she disappeared, Kaur told her brother she would return shortly. However, she never came home. Police later launched a homicide investigation after recovering her body from the canal.
Investigators soon began examining Brar’s movements, travel records and contacts. They also interviewed relatives and witnesses as they worked to reconstruct the events leading to Kaur’s death.
So far, police have arrested three alleged accomplices. Among them is Brar’s father. Authorities accused the suspects of abduction and the illegal use of firearms. Investigators also said the weapons involved were registered to Brar.
Even so, police have not announced formal murder charges against the primary suspect. Under Indian law, investigators have up to 90 days from the date of the killing to complete their investigation and file charges.
Meanwhile, Kaur’s relatives continue to seek international cooperation. They have urged the Canadian government to take action if Indian authorities formally charge Brar.
The victim’s family said investigators already have enough evidence to move forward. They want Canadian officials to assist with legal proceedings and support efforts to return the suspect to India.
If Indian authorities file charges, they would likely submit an extradition request to Canada. That process could involve legal reviews in both countries before any transfer takes place.
