BHUTAN (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history on his state visit to Bhutan by becoming the first foreign head of government to receive Bhutan’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo. Bestowed upon him by King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the honor underscores the deep relationship between India and Bhutan.

Expressing gratitude, Modi dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India, emphasizing the strong bonds between the two nations. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hailed the decision as a testament to the robust friendship between India and Bhutan.

The Order of the Druk Gyalpo, instituted as a decoration for lifetime achievement, holds immense significance within Bhutan’s honor system. It is reserved for those who have made outstanding contributions to society, symbolizing a lifetime of remarkable achievements.

Modi’s accolade adds to the esteemed list of previous recipients, including Queen Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck and notable figures from Bhutan’s monastic body. The honor was announced during Bhutan’s 114th National Day celebrations, marking a historic milestone in bilateral relations.

Upon receiving the award, Modi acknowledged the role of India’s citizens in this achievement. He highlighted the shared vision of progress and development between India and Bhutan, reinforcing the commitment to strengthen bilateral ties further.

The award ceremony, held at Tendrelthang in Thimphu, witnessed Modi’s acceptance of the honor bestowed upon him. His visit to Bhutan reaffirmed India’s Neighborhood First Policy.
