WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — The FBI’s 2024 hate crime report shows Sikhs remain the third most targeted religious group in the United States, highlighting a persistent threat despite a slight decline in incidents.
The data, released on Aug. 5 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, recorded 153 anti-Sikh hate crime victimizations in 2024. That number is slightly lower than the 150 incidents reported in 2023 and a notable drop from 198 in 2022. But civil rights advocates warn the numbers are still deeply concerning.
The Sikh Coalition says the ongoing targeting is disproportionate to the community’s population in the U.S. Sikhs make up a small percentage of the nation’s population, but continue to face high levels of hate and discrimination.
Sikh Americans have long been vulnerable to hate crimes, often due to visible markers of their faith, such as turbans and beards. Many attackers have mistaken Sikhs for members of other communities, especially in the years following 9/11.
“The fact that Sikhs are still the third most targeted religious group is unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for the Sikh Coalition. “Our community deserves safety and dignity like any other American group.”
The FBI’s report confirmed that only Jewish and Muslim communities experienced more hate crimes in 2024. This places Sikhs ahead of larger religious groups, further proving the scale of the issue relative to their size.
While the number of anti-Sikh incidents dropped from 198 in 2022 to 153 in 2024, experts say the decrease is not enough. The numbers may not reflect the full extent of the problem either.
Many hate crimes go unreported, especially when victims fear retaliation or lack trust in law enforcement. Additionally, underreporting by local police departments can lead to gaps in the FBI’s national data.
“The real numbers are likely higher,” the Sikh Coalition stated. “We encourage better reporting and more accurate data collection to understand the true scope of anti-Sikh hate in America.”
Civil rights organizations like the Sikh Coalition continue to push for stronger legal protections and more public awareness. They offer resources for hate crime victims and advocate for better training for law enforcement officers.
The coalition has also called for more proactive outreach from federal and state agencies to religious minority communities. That includes improving cultural competency and ensuring that Sikh Americans feel safe reporting incidents.
Community leaders are urging lawmakers to take stronger steps to protect religious minorities. They want hate crime laws fully enforced and are calling for more funding for education and prevention programs.
The consistent targeting of Sikh Americans reflects a larger issue of religious intolerance in the U.S. Advocates say it’s time for a national reckoning on hate and bigotry.
“We can’t allow these patterns to continue,” said the Sikh Coalition. “It’s not just about numbers’s about real people whose lives are affected every day.”
