Sunny Patel, the 15-year-old high school sophomore who was gunned down during a robbery.

CLEVELAND (Diya TV) — The family of a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed during a robbery decided to spend their holiday season not grieving, but instead giving back.

Sunny Patel was helping his uncle at the sandwich shop in Cleveland Heights on Oct. 14 when he was shot during a robbery.

Official releases said an armed suspect entered his family’s Mr. Hero sandwich shop on Oct. 14 and shot the boy once in the head before taking money from the cash register and fleeing. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office Oct. 15 identified the teenage boy as 15-year-old Sunny Ravi Patel of Highland Heights. He died at a hospital.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help the Patel family with expenses. They said they were overwhelmed with support and decided to donate the money because that’s what Sunny would have wanted. This month, the Patels donated $20,000 to the Cleveland Heights Police Department and Cleveland Heights Fire Department to show their gratitude.

Each department received an equal $10,000 donation.

Patel’s family also donated $13,500 to Mayfield High School, where he was a sophomore. The money will be used to create a bookstore in his memory.

Daveion Perry, 20, pleaded guilty to 15 counts, including aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and felonious assault. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
