SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Diya TV) — A 20-year-old man facing a firearms charge threw an explosive device into a Santa Maria courthouse on Wednesday, injuring five people and triggering evacuations of nearby buildings. The suspect, Nathaniel McGuire, was due to be arraigned when the attack occurred, authorities said.
McGuire entered the courthouse and approached a security screening station before tossing a bag containing the explosive, which detonated and caused minor injuries to five individuals, three of whom sustained burns. None of the victims were courthouse employees, and all were treated and released from a local hospital, according to Santa Barbara County Undersheriff Craig Bonner.
McGuire fled the scene but was apprehended near his vehicle by a courthouse security guard, a sheriff’s deputy, and California Highway Patrol officers. Bonner also confirmed that McGuire was wearing body armor during the incident.
“Thanks to the quick actions of our officers and security, the suspect was apprehended without further incident,” Bonner stated during a news conference.
McGuire, who had been arrested in July for illegal gun possession, now faces additional charges, including attempted murder and the use of an explosive device. Investigators are exploring possible links between McGuire and a recent series of arson cases in the area, though no connections have been confirmed.
Authorities stressed that the attack appeared to be an isolated incident with no ties to terrorism or political motives. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office are involved in the ongoing investigation to ensure no broader threats exist.
Following the explosion, officials evacuated nearby businesses, homes, and a school as a precaution. The courthouse will remain closed Thursday, and extended filing deadlines are in place for those affected by the closure.
Santa Maria Mayor Alice Patino expressed her concern over the unprecedented nature of the event, assuring residents that the city is working closely with law enforcement to maintain safety.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or McGuire’s activities to contact the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office or the FBI.
