AUSTIN, Texas (Diya TV) — Elon Musk has announced an ambitious plan to build a massive semiconductor factory in Austin, Texas, as part of his broader push into artificial intelligence, robotics, and space technology. The project, called the Terafab, aims to produce advanced chips for Tesla, SpaceX, and his AI venture xAI. Musk unveiled the plan during an event in Austin on Saturday, describing it as one of the most ambitious chip-building efforts ever attempted.

Musk said the Terafab will produce two types of semiconductors. One will focus on “edge and inference” computing. These chips will power Tesla’s self-driving cars and its Optimus humanoid robots. The second type will support high-performance computing for space applications.

He linked the effort to his long-term goal of turning humanity into a “galactic civilization.” A key part of that vision includes building space-based data centers powered by advanced chips.

“We need the chips,” Musk said. “So we are going to build the Terafab.”

The factory will aim to deliver a terawatt of chip output per year. Musk said the facility will include all the tools needed to design, build, and test chips in one location. He added that the company plans to push the limits of physics and computing.

The announcement reflects growing demand for semiconductors, especially those used in AI systems. Companies across industries face supply constraints as demand for advanced chips continues to rise. Musk acknowledged current suppliers like Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. However, he said their expansion pace does not match his company’s needs.

Tesla currently relies on external foundries to manufacture its custom-designed chips. The company signed a multibillion-dollar deal with Samsung last year to support its AI and autonomous driving programs. By building its own facility, Musk aims to reduce dependence on external suppliers and accelerate production.

Building a semiconductor fabrication plant is expensive and time-consuming. Analysts estimate that the Terafab could cost tens of billions of dollars. Some projections suggest the total investment could reach $300 billion over time. Musk’s companies already plan to spend more than $20 billion this year. That figure does not include the cost of the new facility.

Industry experts say chip factories take years to complete. They also require highly specialized equipment and skilled workers. Even experienced companies face delays. TSMC, one of the world’s leading chipmakers, has struggled with its U.S. projects despite its deep expertise. Its Arizona facility has faced delays and rising costs, highlighting the challenges of building advanced fabs in the United States.

Musk did not provide a timeline for the Terafab project. He also did not explain how Tesla and SpaceX will divide responsibilities. The two companies recently expanded their collaboration following SpaceX’s closer alignment with xAI. Still, Musk emphasized the importance of acting quickly. He said the demand for chips will only increase as AI, robotics, and space computing continue to grow.

The Terafab will combine chip design, manufacturing, and testing at a single site. Musk said this approach will create a faster feedback loop. Engineers will be able to improve designs quickly and boost production efficiency.

Analysts describe the plan as bold but risky. They note that Musk has a history of setting aggressive goals. Some experts question whether the company can execute such a complex project at the proposed scale. However, others see the move as a natural step. As AI adoption grows, companies seek more control over their hardware supply chains.

If successful, the Terafab could reshape the semiconductor landscape. It could also strengthen the United States’ position in advanced chip manufacturing. For now, the project remains in its early stages. But Musk’s message is clear: he wants to move fast and build big, even in one of the most challenging industries in the world.
