STORRS, Conn. (Diya TV) — The University of Connecticut has named Indian-American veterinarian Dr. Kumar Venkitanarayanan as the interim dean of its College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR). The appointment comes as the university begins a national search for a permanent dean.

Dr. Venkitanarayanan, a professor of animal science, will lead the college through a period of transition. He will provide strategic direction, support student and faculty success, and strengthen the college’s research and outreach programs.

The university announced in late June, noting Venkitanarayanan’s leadership skills and deep experience in agriculture and food safety. UConn Provost Anne D’Alleva expressed confidence in his ability to guide the college. “I am grateful to him for stepping into this role and for the continuity and leadership he will provide during this period of transition,” D’Alleva said.

Dr. Venkitanarayanan is internationally known for his work in poultry and egg safety. His research aims to develop antibiotic-free methods to fight foodborne pathogens. These pathogens can cause serious illness if not properly controlled. His work supports a shift toward organic and sustainable food production.

He currently leads a major research effort funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The $10 million project, backed by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), focuses on making poultry production more sustainable and efficient.

Before becoming interim dean, Dr. Venkitanarayanan served as CAHNR’s senior associate dean for research and graduate studies. In that role, he helped build partnerships with universities in India. These partnerships have opened doors for faculty and students to work on global research projects. His efforts have expanded UConn’s international presence in agricultural and food sciences.

In 2021, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) named him a fellow. The honor recognized his major contributions to food safety and public health. Dr. Venkitanarayanan brings both academic and practical expertise to his new role. He plans to continue expanding the college’s mission in teaching, research, and community outreach.

“I am honored to support the teaching, research, and extension mission at CAHNR,” he said in a statement. “I am excited to continue to seek creative strategies to elevate CAHNR’s unique strengths and amplify our impactful programs that reach all of Connecticut’s cities and towns, as well as communities around the world.”

His leadership comes at a time when agriculture, food systems, and public health are undergoing rapid change. Issues such as sustainability, climate change, and global food security are reshaping how universities approach agricultural research and education.

The College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources plays a key role in supporting Connecticut’s economy and communities. It trains students in fields such as animal science, nutrition, plant science, environmental health, and agricultural technology. The college also runs programs that support farmers, families, and local businesses across the state.

With Dr. Venkitanarayanan at the helm, the university expects to strengthen its research footprint and expand its service to the public. His record of innovation and dedication to food safety make him a strong fit for the role. As the university conducts its national search for a permanent dean, Dr. Venkitanarayanan will help maintain momentum and stability. His experience will be vital in shaping the college’s next chapter.
