LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Renowned Los Angeles gastroenterologist and philanthropist, Dr. Jasvant Modi, is committing $13 million to establish Jain Studies programs at colleges and universities across the United States. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Vardhamana Charitable Foundation, aims to elevate awareness of Jainism among U.S. college students.

The generous pledge, sourced from individual gifts, holds a broader vision of nurturing tolerance and respect for non-Western traditions. With 28 U.S. schools, including prestigious institutions like the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, joining the cause, the impact is set to resonate throughout higher education.

“We have a unique opportunity to educate young individuals who will shape our future,” affirms Dr. Modi. “Introducing them to Jain principles of tolerance and respect is essential in an age where such principles remain undervalued and untaught.”

The initiative, supported by the International School for Jain Studies, aligns with the mission to enrich students with the ancient wisdom of Jainism. Dr. Modi, originally from Godhra, India, has dedicated his philanthropy to extending the reach of Jainism beyond borders.

In a parallel development, Georgia College & State University announces the establishment of the “S & R Palvia Endowed Veetraag Vigyaan Professorship in Jain Studies,” thanks to a generous $250,000 gift from Dr. Shailendra Palvia and Mrs. Rajkumari Palvia. The endowed professorship aims to integrate Jain perspectives into courses across disciplines, fostering a deeper understanding of this ancient religion.

Jainism, with its core tenets of non-violence, respect for diverse perspectives, and contentment with limited possessions, will now be infused into philosophy, religion, literature, history, and art courses at Georgia College. The Endowed Professor in Jain Studies is expected to be in place by Fall 2023, further expanding the horizons of liberal arts education.

The Palvia family’s substantial contribution is complemented by an annual $10,000 commitment from the Jain Community of America, ensuring ongoing support for faculty development and student learning opportunities. The move underscores a commitment to exploring the diverse religious cultures of the world and fostering a global perspective among students.
