PUNE, India (Diya TV) — Tensions are high in Manchar in the Pune district of India after workers discovered a tunnel-like structure beneath a dargah or tomb for a Muslim saint during renovation, sparking a dispute between Hindu and Muslim groups.

The incident took place on Thursday evening when part of the dargah collapsed. During repair work, laborers noticed a wooden structure that appeared to resemble a tunnel. The structure is about six feet deep, according to local officials.

News of the discovery spread quickly in the area. Within hours, groups from both Hindu and Muslim communities gathered at the site. Each side began making claims about the structure, leading to arguments and a charged atmosphere.

Members of Hindu groups demanded a full investigation into the tunnel-like structure. They argued that it could be part of an old temple and insisted that authorities must uncover its origin. Community leaders said the public has the right to know the history of the site.

On the other hand, Muslim organizations expressed anger over the damage to the dargah. They called the collapse unfortunate and criticized the way renovation work was carried out. Leaders also urged authorities to ensure the dargah is restored with respect and care.

Police quickly stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating. Ramesh Chopade, Additional Superintendent of Rural Police, said officers acted to maintain calm.

“The situation is under control and a heavy police bandobast has been deployed to stop any suspicious activity,” Chopade told The Free Press Journal. “Entry of locals into the site has been restricted, and CCTV surveillance has been installed.”

He also confirmed that officials had referred the matter to the appropriate department for investigation. “Both communities started claiming their ancestral rights. Currently, this matter is under investigation,” he said.

Authorities are now studying the wooden structure to determine its purpose and age. Experts are expected to inspect the site in the coming days. Officials said it is too early to confirm whether the structure is truly a tunnel or has any historical or religious significance.

Meanwhile, police appealed to both groups to maintain peace. They warned that any attempt to spread rumors or incite violence will face strict action.

The discovery has reignited old tensions between the two communities in the region. Residents said social media posts and WhatsApp messages have already begun circulating, with unverified claims about the site. Authorities urged people not to share or believe unconfirmed information.

Community leaders on both sides called for calm. Some suggested forming a joint committee to oversee the investigation, while others demanded the government release details as soon as possible to prevent speculation.

Pune district has a long history of cultural and religious diversity. Sites like temples, dargahs, and old shrines often stand close to one another. Archaeologists say it is not unusual for ancient structures to exist beneath modern religious sites. However, these discoveries can sometimes trigger disputes when communities link them to sensitive historical claims.

For now, the tunnel-like structure remains sealed off from the public. Police and local officials continue to monitor the area closely. Residents are waiting for the outcome of the official investigation, which will likely determine whether the structure has any historical or religious importance.

Authorities said their priority is to ensure peace in Manchar. They stressed that the investigation will be transparent and that facts, not rumors, will guide the next steps.
