OAKLAND, Calif. (Diya TV) — Even when off the court, Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is breaking records.
He became the first in history to win the NBA’s MVP award by unanimous decision, earning all 131 first-place — for a total of 1,310 — votes from the group of sportswriters and broadcasters who select the winner.
“I looked at the list of everybody who’s won an MVP award … legends,” Curry said. “To be the first unanimous MVP award winner is something I don’t even know how to put into words.”
His speech came just one day after his return from an MCL sprain on Monday night, where he proceeded to set yet another record — during the Warriors’ Monday night matchup against the Portland Trailblazers, Curry scored 17 points in the fifth period, a new league record. He finished with 40 points for the game.
San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard finished second in the voting with 634 points, with Cleveland Cavaliers megastar LeBron James trailing in a close third with 631 points of his own.
During his press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Curry said he never imagined his three-point shooting skills would revolutionize the game in the way it has, but hopes people will remember him for more than just that.
“I want to be remembered as someone who worked hard, that got the most out of my potential and talent and pushed the envelope,” he said.
He reminded all of those in attendance and watching on TV that he’s just one piece of an entire roster that will go down in NBA history as one of the greatest. He hopes.
“We’re definitely on the right path to being one of those historic teams that people remember for a very long time. Let’s keep this thing going.”
The Warriors as a team this season set a new standard for the most wins during the regular season — 73. Of his teammates, Curry said, “No team has done what these 15 guys on this stage have done in the history of the game. It’s a special team.”
His coach was proud, too.
“Winning MVP last year wasn’t enough,” head coach Steve Kerr said on Tuesday. “You came back this year dramatically better. … I’ve seen very few players who possess the confidence you have. You better believe in yourself when you’re shimmying at 1 for 11 (as Curry did last night).”
